China has set an ambitious target of putting one million hybrid and electric vehicles onto its roads by the end of the decade. Although the current level of hybrid and electric vehicles in the country stands at just 83,000, manufacturers and officials are confident of reaching the 2020 target – which then extends to three million EVs by 2025. Up to 10% of those vehicles will be earmarked for export.
Though ambitious, those targets have been scaled back from the original plan, which called for 500,000 new-energy vehicles (NEVs) in China by the end of this year, and five million by 2020. Porsche is all set to open its fifth showroom in the country. The Stuttgart based luxury sports carmaker will open its new showroom in Kolkata on May 30, 2015. The showroom, Porsche Centre Kolkata will be located near Topsia Road in the city. This is company’s fifth showroom after the ones in Mumbai, Gurgaon, Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

Bentley Motors today announced Stefan Sielaff as its new director of design. He succeeds Luc Donckerwolke who has been with Bentley since 2012 and has decided to leave the business and Volkswagen AG. Mr Sielaff will join Bentley on July 1, 2015 from his current dual role as head of Volkswagen Group Interior Design and Design Director at Volkswagen Design Center Potsdam. In his role at Bentley, he will report to Rolf Frech, Bentley’s Member of the Board for Engineering. He will also retain his position as head of Volkswagen Group Interior Design, reporting to director of Volkswagen Group Design, Dr Walter de Silva.

BMW, among the first carmakers to drive the importance of connectivity between cars, drivers and their surroundings with its ConnectedDrive, is further expanding its position as a premium mobility provider. Now, with the Dynamic Parking Prediction research project, the BMW Group is demonstrating a solution that will in future be able to shorten the search for vacant on-street parking, particularly in cities. Together with its partner INRIX, a global provider of transportation intelligence and connected car services, it will present a research prototype of this application at TU-Automotive Detroit (formerly Telematics Detroit), one of the world’s leading connected car fairs, from June 3-4 June 2015, in a BMW i3. Dynamic Parking Prediction is able to predict parking availability using movement data from vehicle fleets.

Kicking off the launch of its first new product of a proposed nine product launches slated for fiscal 2015-16, Mahindra & Mahindra today introduced the refreshed version of its XUV500 SUV that will be on offer at dealerships almost immediately. First introduced in September 2011, the flagship SUV reached its 100,000 unit milestone in 34 months of its rollout. Of the nine products planned, three will be entirely new platforms, three will be major refreshes and three minor refreshes, said Dr Pawan Goenka, executive director, at the launch in New Delhi.
The new XUV 500 is part of the major refreshes and comes at a starting price of Rs 11.21 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). GM’s Cadillac brand and Shanghai OnStar joint venture are showing China’s first 4G LTE telematics service along with the CarLife app, the MyCadillac app and an Apple Watch app at CES Asia, which opened today in Shanghai. Later this year, Cadillac will become the initial vehicle brand in China to offer 4G LTE telematics service. 4G LTE is the most current and fastest mobile data network – 10 times faster than 3G.
